Saw the movie. Liked it a lot. I’m currently reading Mockingjay.

Art: Lady Emily Merchant http://artgyrl.com/wordpress/2012/03/31/art-lady-emily-merchant/ http://artgyrl.com/wordpress/2012/03/31/art-lady-emily-merchant/#comments Sat, 31 Mar 2012 17:02:03 +0000 Sharon http://artgyrl.com/wordpress/?p=585

I updated my operating system to OSX Lion, which summarily made my version of Adobe CS obsolete. So now I’m being forced to finally upgrade. This is all the more imperative since it looks like this whole “being an artist” thing is beginning to show promise. It’s great, really, but I will never be fond of the need to spend money to make money.

IF: fluid http://artgyrl.com/wordpress/2012/02/24/if-fluid/ http://artgyrl.com/wordpress/2012/02/24/if-fluid/#comments Sat, 25 Feb 2012 03:13:44 +0000 Sharon http://artgyrl.com/wordpress/?p=581 This week’s Illustration Friday theme was “fluid.” I went with a fairly literal interpretation.

I just purchased two sets of Pigma Micron pens by Sakura, one set black ink with various tip sizes, the other with uniformly sized tips but different colors.

I did not know quite what to expect or what the crowd would be like. But people came out in drives on that exceptionally chilly January night. I am ever grateful for the support of family, friends, and complete strangers.

My art will remain on display at the Mobile Arts Council through this Friday, January 27.

The good thing is, it cooled the ground so that this morning it actually felt like September.

I drew something yesterday, inspired by the incessant rainfall. I named her Dima, which means “downpour” in Arabic.

Yes, my art show.

It’s currently set for January. So exciting. I won’t reveal the theme just yet, but you will most likely get an idea as I post more works-in-progress.

Check out more progress shots on my tumblr, as well as on Facebook.

art: Marjani http://artgyrl.com/wordpress/2011/07/30/art-marjani/ http://artgyrl.com/wordpress/2011/07/30/art-marjani/#comments Sun, 31 Jul 2011 01:54:36 +0000 Sharon http://artgyrl.com/wordpress/?p=542

Yay! I drew something that’s not fan art. This is my unfortunate reality, because I’ve been doing so much more of the former these past few years. It’s just easier when the characters are ready-made.

I’ve been trying to get back into doing original art though. It’s hard for me to come up with concepts, but it’s usually the little things in my surroundings that stimulate my artistic muse. Last night I took a spontaneous trip to the Fairhope Pier with my older sister. Lots of people were there fishing, and I took a few photos, which I posted on tumblr.

Today, I decided to draw a guy and a girl standing on the side of the pier, the guy fishing and the girl standing next to him. I sketched it out like that, but I wasn’t feeling the look of the guy, so I decided to just draw the girl—and that she should have awesome natural hair, and I would suck it up and draw the detail in her hair texture.

I named her Marjani, which means “coral” in Swahili.

life + style + art: beach retro http://artgyrl.com/wordpress/2011/05/28/life-style-art-beach-retro/ http://artgyrl.com/wordpress/2011/05/28/life-style-art-beach-retro/#comments Sun, 29 May 2011 02:12:42 +0000 Sharon http://artgyrl.com/wordpress/?p=543

Today has been a good day. I went to Johnson’s Beach in Perdido, Florida with all of my immediate family, minus my little sis who vacation plans of her own. Still, it was a beautiful day. I actually braved the Gulf waters for the first time since the BP oil rig disaster a little over a year ago. The water was cool, yet refreshing, and there was a continuous, cool breeze blowing the entire time.

I wasn’t sure if I was going to get in the water, yet I didn’t feel like styling my hair, so before leaving, I wrapped my hair up in this yellow, patterned scarf that I purchased a few months ago from ModCloth but had yet to wear. I also wore my Favela shirt by Threadless and some olive clam diggers that I hadn’t worn in ages, cuffing the bottom to give them an different look.

And I drew something, inspired by my turban, my sister’s glasses, and general surroundings. For example, those two girls in the background were actually there.

I see a few things I want to change about this. I’m going to to retrace the lines in Photoshop with my tablet and then color it.

Here’s a handy video of how I wore my turban, except I tied it a little differently (read: crappily). My mom said I looked like Lucille Ball while my sis claimed I looked like Rosie the Riveter. Cool beans. :)

hey soul sister, you better (net)work http://artgyrl.com/wordpress/2011/05/27/hey-soul-sister-you-better-network/ http://artgyrl.com/wordpress/2011/05/27/hey-soul-sister-you-better-network/#comments Sat, 28 May 2011 02:15:25 +0000 Sharon http://artgyrl.com/wordpress/?p=538 I haven’t talked about my natural hair journey in a while. It’s still going. I’m still learning what works best for my hair and what doesn’t. I will decide that I’m not going to straighten my hair for a while only to get bored of my ‘fro and resort to the flatiron a few weeks later. For now, I resolve to not straighten my hair for most of the summer.

Last Saturday, I attend a natural hair meet up for the first time. It was held that afternoon at a popular restaurant, The Spot of Tea (everything is good there). I initially found out about the group while browsing Meetup.com. There I came across the group for naturals in my area, founded by Tanene Jackson, a local hair stylist. Thing is, when I first went to my old hair dresser, asking her for tips on caring for my newly natural teeny weeny afro (TWA), she gave me Tanene’s number. That was almost two years ago, and I never followed up.

A few months ago, I picked up a flyer featuring community activities held at my old high school, and there was a class called Natural Hair 101, taught by none other than this same Tanene. I couldn’t arrange my schedule to attend that class either, but still, I thought it was pretty cool that this person’s name kept popping up, particularly in association with natural hair.

So, I signed up for the local natural hair group on Meetup and waited for notification of the next get-together. The first one I missed, but I had signed up my older sister and hair-inspiration to attend with me. The next meetup that came around, Crystal was the one that signed me and my mom up as her +2.

Saturday rolled around, and I had forgotten all about the meet until Crystal reminded me a few hours before. So, I drag up the will to get ready and go. My hair was currently flat-ironed, and I had really wanted to rock a nice twist-out for my first meet, but whatever. As I we approached the restaurant, we saw a girl walking down the street with her hair pulled back in a puffed. My mom wondered out loud if maybe the girl was going to the meetup, and my sister and I were like, “Nah.” Of course, we get to the restaurant, and the same girl is sitting at the table. I found out she’s from St. Kitts, here attending university because the University of South Alabama (my alma mater) has this amazing meteorology program that no one ever talks about.

Long story a little shorter, I got to meet some really nice naturalistas, including the elusive Tanene. She was very warm and personable and I would really like to visit her salon soon. (I usually like to take pictures at this sort of thing, but I felt wasn’t comfortable taking photos of complete strangers in such an intimate setting. Next time though…) Tanene told us about the Natural Hair and Wellness Expo that she was hosting next month on June 18. I will definitely try to attend. However, I literally just signed up for Art as Business: Using Social Media to Promote the Arts which happens to be the same day, but the times overlap so I will be able to attend the Natural Hair Expo later in the day.

I’m going to have to get some pieces together to bring to the seminar. I just ordered a new set of Moo cards that will be in next week. They’re regular size this time rather than the mini cards that I usually order. I can’t wait to see them. I just received the card holder in the mail today and it’s so great. I was delighted simply by the way it was packaged, not to mention what was actually inside.

Just something I whipped up for my dad. That’s actually the house in which I spent the first 5 years of my life. My grew up in this house. Even though most of my life was spent in a different home, I have lots of very fond memories of my time spent here. It doesn’t really seem like it was over 20 years ago.

That’s a dummy phone number at the bottom.
