hello, (ides of) march | robyn + marian

March 15, 2016 by Sharon | 0 comments

Yeah, that’s what today is. Apparently the Romans had this whole system for naming the point they were in the month. Pretty interesting stuff.

Incidentally, this is my first post of 2016. A few things have been going on behind the scenes here at artgyrl, and I’ve just failed to update my blog here. I’ve been pushing my Patreon more, uploading more exclusive art there. I finally got going with developing and drawing my comic. Recent updates will be posted exclusively to Patreon first and then here. So consider subscribing if you would like to get a first look at my new content. I won’t bore you with all the details here, so click the link for more info. :)

Some sketches of Robyn and Marian, the main characters of my comic. I drew it in a handmade sketchbook, so I’m not sure of the paper, probably about 80lb, colored with Copic and Spectrum Noir markers, outlined with Staedtler Pigment Liners, and highlights with a Uni-ball gel pen.

inktober: week 1

October 5, 2015 by Sharon | 0 comments

I don’t really think much about the fact that I’m an artist. It’s just something I have always done and have gotten pretty good at over the years. However, like any skill, the only way you can get better is to practice. Unlike many other physical activities, art is something that you can start at practically any age and continue to improve and evolve in your abilities. It’s always important to challenge myself and try new techniques.

The introduction of Periscope was a way for me to have a live window into the creation process of my favorite artists. I never thought I would really have a use for Copic markers, but after watching other artists use them, I found I have a use for them after all.

Last year I discovred the Inktober Project. I t was a great way to challenge myself to use ink more. This year, I’m more determined to complete all the drawings. Drawing has come easier since I’ve been doing it more consistently (go figure), so I’m really excited to see what I can produce. I’ve branched out to using a brush to ink my pieces, and I bought a set of Faber-Castell PITT Artists Pens (Manga Black), which I have yet to use.

day 02 & 03 | gaby teller + illya kurkakin (smol + tol) | the man from u.n.c.l.e.

All drawings were done on Strathmore 300 Series Bristol paper with Winsor & Newton Cotman 00 round brush and Higgins Ink in Black Magic.

I’m not too happy with Jemma’s likeness. I can’t get her nose quite right. Maybe this week I will switch it up with the PITT Pens. But I like to leave myself open to what the Muse wants

sketchbook | original character (oc) meme

August 3, 2015 by Sharon | 0 comments

Happy August!

I cannot believe that more than half the year has gone by already. But I am doing better by posting new(ish) art two Mondays in a row. So, yay! for consistency.

A month ago, I did a OC meme, just for fun. Many of you may not know that I have a good amount of original characters that have been created over the years. It’s been a while since I had drawn many of my characters. So I thought it would be cool to see what they would look like in my current drawing style as well as modern clothing.

The following commentary and scribbles beside each drawing give evidence to what a big nerd I am.

1. Your first OC ever?

I created Adriana (and her friends) back in middle school. I was reading a lot of teen romance novels. So I came up with this story and characters that was actually quite dark and scandalous. Basically a wholesome girl who gets in over her head when she starts spending time with the mysterious new guy in town.

art | jubilee

jubilee2015

Yesterday I mentioned to my sister that I was writing the previous blog post. She said that she had honestly forgotten that I had a blog. >_<

I loved the characters from the 90s X-Men cartoon, and for quite some time I’ve been wanting to draw Jubilee. I broadcast the process on periscope. You can view it here for a few more hours.

So don’t be surprised if a wild Rogue or Gambit pop up in the next few days.

Just a post to show that I’m still alive. My version of Robyn Hoode & Marian with their genders switched. I’d like to do more with them and draw the rest of the characters, like the Sheriff, Little John, Will Scarlett…

This was drawn in pencil and colored using Photshop CC.
