It’s really sad that I’ve waited this long long to make my first post of the 2013. Better late than never in this case.
If you’ve been following my Facebook page, you may already be aware of the events I am about to recount. I have become a fan of the Lizzie Bennet Diaries. So much so, that I decided to do yet another piece of fan art. I posted it on my tumblr.
Because I like to make myself suffer, I decided to color it. It eventually found its way to being reblogged by Ashley Clements (Lizzie Bennet) and production designer Katie Moest, tweeted by Geek & Sundry, and finally reblogged by Hank Green, producer of The Lizzie Bennet Diaries. I actually thanks Ashley for the love and she tweeted me back. So. Life Achievement Level unlocked.
While I really, truly, absolutely love doing fan art, I am also reminded that I have my own original characters and story that I’d like to get out in some form. So last night I decided to sketch out two of the leads and go ahead and color them, too.
This is based on a scene I wrote of their first meeting after many years, which occurs in the marketplace. E’lari dressed down, trying to blend in with the more common folk (her family is stupid-rich). At first I had E’lari in a purple scarf, because that generally symbolizes royalty. Seemingly on a whim, I changed it to lapiz lazuli, which is actually a color I had her wearing in an earlier incarnation of the character. And according to Wikipedia, lapiz lazuli was an exorbitantly expensive pigment which Vermeer used in his painting “Girl With The Pearl Earring,” so that works in being something a wealthy person would wear. I like Seiahn in green. It fits his more reserved, slightly mysterious character.
I’m getting better at coloring my own art, which is a relief. In this case, I can see a definitely influence from the art of Claire Hummel/shoomlah. I like the simplicity of the flat colors with just a hint of shading via gradient layers.
