fan art friday: gamora + fitz | fitzsimmons + tea | hipster!fitzsimmons

September 25, 2015 by Sharon | 0 comments

The idea for this piece was presented to me as a commission request. The patron wanted Gamora and Fitz “being friendly.” As you can see, this is a very broad prompt, and they were open to whatever I interpreted it to mean.

My first idea was to have Fitz showing Gamora some custom piece of tech. I spent about an hour drawing that, but I didn’t like where the drawing was headed. The composition was too staid, and I felt that the two characters weren’t interacting enough.

Plan B involved drawing Gamora wearing that white and black space suit that I had seen in several reference images that came up when I googled her. I really liked the detail in that outfit. And people are fans of Fitz in tactical gear, so I thought that would be fun to drawn and created an interesting dynamic to play with.

Now let’s rewind to a few months ago. I received a commission to draw Fitz & Simmons drinking tea, and the patron requested them posed in a very specific way and even provided an adequate reference photo. I don’t mind at all if the person has a very specific thing in mind. In many ways, that makes my job easier. Generally, if they’re commissioning me, they know what kind of work I produce and what kind of feeling I can get with the characters. So there is already a level of trust established, which helps me not be so hung up on whether I get certain things right.

Finally, we have my favorite Fitzsimmons art that I’ve drawn to date. Allison sent me a prompt asking for hipster!Fitzsimmons. For whatever reason, I was inspired, and after a brief search on Pinterest for a collection of references, something pretty adorable came out.

Oh…and Clark Gregg (yes, Agent Phil Coulson, himself) may have actually retweeted it. XD

So, it’s good that other people seem to like this one, too.

For those interested in the technical details, the pen drawings were drawn in blue pencil and then inked with Staedtler Pigment Liners. The last piece was drawn in a mechanical pencil and then scanned and colored using Photoshop CC.

fan art friday: jane + daria

I’m barely getting this posted on a Friday, but it makes 4 weeks in a row of fan art. So let’s celebrate the small successes. :)

Here we have Jane Lane and Daria Morgendorffer from the 90’s cartoon Daria. The challenge was to translate the very simple cartoon version of the characters into my more realistic style. I quite like how they came out. This would look so much better colored, which I am currently working. However, I did not get it finished in time for today’s post. So stay tuned for that.

Have a great weekend!

fan art friday: gambit + rogue [x-men]

I was a big fan of the X-Men cartoon series back in the day. So it was with warm nostalgia that I decided to draw this pair in my current style. After my first unsuccessful attempt at drawing 90s Gambit and Rogue, I chose to start fresh. It ended up being more of a mid-century style of the characters, but I like it a lot. Especially Remy’s face. And hair. Who am I kidding? I love everything about how he turned out. (I am notoriously and vocally up front about my deficiency in drawing the male form.) The drawing process was broadcast live via Periscope.

The initial sketch was done in blue pencil. Then I went straight to inks with Staedtler pens. Then I scanned the drawing and colored it using Photoshop. You can view more photos of my progress at my Instagram (sharon82).

Email me to purchase a PRINT.

If you have a suggestion for characters you would like to see me draw, please leave me a comment.

Have a great weekend!

fan art friday: raven, skye, & ariel

Hello, y’all. Happy Friday!

I recently started using the live streaming app Periscope (@artgyrl), and it’s been a lot of fun. Being able to watch some of my favorite artist as they draw has been most inspiring. And I’ve also been introduced to some new artists. Hosting my own live drawing sessions has helped me improve my drawing skills.

I really wanted to draw more standalone characters, so this was a good exercise for that. I also acquired some new art supplies to help improve both my drawings and the quality of my streams. I purchased a 6-pack of Staedtler Pigment Liners, and I’m in love. They are a little more expensive than Sakura Pigma Microns (which I’ve been using since college), but the quality is noticeably better. The Staedtler tip seems to be more firm and the ink flows more smoothly as I’m longer lines. So if you have the extra cash, I’d definitely recommend getting the latter.

raven reyes“The Engineer” | Raven Reyes | The 100

One of my tumblr followers suggested that I draw her.

quake

Daisy Johnson/Skye/Quake | Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Another request from tumblr. This was drawn with a Uni Kuru Toga mechanical pencil with both regular and blue lead and inked with the Sakura Pigma Microns. Notice the roucher lines. I think I drew this on acid-free card stock, so that could have also contributed to the line quality.

ariel

“part of your world” | Ariel | The Little Mermaid

I hadn’t planned on drawing this. I had logged in to Periscope, at a loss of what to draw, so I asked my followers for suggestions. I’d never drawn Ariel before, so I thought it would be an interesting challenge. This was drawn completely in blue pencil on Strathmore 300 Series Bristol paper and inked with the Staedtler Pigment Liners. The lines are much smoother.

sketchbook | original character (oc) meme

Happy August!

I cannot believe that more than half the year has gone by already. But I am doing better by posting new(ish) art two Mondays in a row. So, yay! for consistency.

A month ago, I did a OC meme, just for fun. Many of you may not know that I have a good amount of original characters that have been created over the years. It’s been a while since I had drawn many of my characters. So I thought it would be cool to see what they would look like in my current drawing style as well as modern clothing.

The following commentary and scribbles beside each drawing give evidence to what a big nerd I am.

1. Your first OC ever?

I created Adriana (and her friends) back in middle school. I was reading a lot of teen romance novels. So I came up with this story and characters that was actually quite dark and scandalous. Basically a wholesome girl who gets in over her head when she starts spending time with the mysterious new guy in town.
