fan art friday: raven, skye, & ariel

August 21, 2015 by Sharon | 0 comments

Hello, y’all. Happy Friday!

I recently started using the live streaming app Periscope (@artgyrl), and it’s been a lot of fun. Being able to watch some of my favorite artist as they draw has been most inspiring. And I’ve also been introduced to some new artists. Hosting my own live drawing sessions has helped me improve my drawing skills.

I really wanted to draw more standalone characters, so this was a good exercise for that. I also acquired some new art supplies to help improve both my drawings and the quality of my streams. I purchased a 6-pack of Staedtler Pigment Liners, and I’m in love. They are a little more expensive than Sakura Pigma Microns (which I’ve been using since college), but the quality is noticeably better. The Staedtler tip seems to be more firm and the ink flows more smoothly as I’m longer lines. So if you have the extra cash, I’d definitely recommend getting the latter.

raven reyes“The Engineer” | Raven Reyes | The 100

One of my tumblr followers suggested that I draw her.

quake

Daisy Johnson/Skye/Quake | Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Another request from tumblr. This was drawn with a Uni Kuru Toga mechanical pencil with both regular and blue lead and inked with the Sakura Pigma Microns. Notice the roucher lines. I think I drew this on acid-free card stock, so that could have also contributed to the line quality.

ariel

“part of your world” | Ariel | The Little Mermaid

I hadn’t planned on drawing this. I had logged in to Periscope, at a loss of what to draw, so I asked my followers for suggestions. I’d never drawn Ariel before, so I thought it would be an interesting challenge. This was drawn completely in blue pencil on Strathmore 300 Series Bristol paper and inked with the Staedtler Pigment Liners. The lines are much smoother.

sketchbook | original character (oc) meme

Happy August!

I cannot believe that more than half the year has gone by already. But I am doing better by posting new(ish) art two Mondays in a row. So, yay! for consistency.

A month ago, I did a OC meme, just for fun. Many of you may not know that I have a good amount of original characters that have been created over the years. It’s been a while since I had drawn many of my characters. So I thought it would be cool to see what they would look like in my current drawing style as well as modern clothing.

The following commentary and scribbles beside each drawing give evidence to what a big nerd I am.

1. Your first OC ever?

I created Adriana (and her friends) back in middle school. I was reading a lot of teen romance novels. So I came up with this story and characters that was actually quite dark and scandalous. Basically a wholesome girl who gets in over her head when she starts spending time with the mysterious new guy in town.

Hello, March.

March 11, 2014 by Sharon | 0 comments

Finally an update.

I had grand plans for awesome new content and features, beginning the month of February. As you can see, we’re halfway through March (where does the year go?), and that has yet to occur. There’s still time, though, and it’s always good to have goals to keep me moving forward.

Today I’m doing the hipster thing, wearing a truly vintage shirt. It belonged to my dad and it’s from the 1982 Fiesta Run in Pensacola, FL. Back then, he was into jogging (before it was cool, to hear him tell it), so I guess the apple hasn’t fallen far.

On top of that, I’m blogging from a cafe. It was needed though. Since my niece was born, it’s been difficult to get a quiet moment to focus on things. I easily get distracted with being ask to hold her and/or watch her while someone goes and does something or the other.

And she indeed needs to be watched, because that baby is quite precocious and love to “explore” her surroundings.

So…about the plans for my blog. Hopefully, within the next week, I will start posting Featured Artist Interviews. Over the past year-and-a-half, I’ve met many amazing artists, and I’m eager to share their worth with you.

I also plan on doing a Throwback Thursday: Art Edition. I started doing this on my Instagram, occasionally posting images of old art, especially when I didn’t have an old photo available. I might do this in conjunction with a version of the Draw This Again Meme, in which you take a piece of old art and redraw it, making use of your current and improved artistic skills.

As always, I will keep posting art. Here’s a Rule 63 Robin Hood that I did for @sketch_dailies.

art dump: lbd + oc’s

It’s really sad that I’ve waited this long long to make my first post of the 2013. Better late than never in this case.

If you’ve been following my Facebook page, you may already be aware of the events I am about to recount. I have become a fan of the Lizzie Bennet Diaries. So much so, that I decided to do yet another piece of fan art. I posted it on my tumblr.

Because I like to make myself suffer, I decided to color it. It eventually found its way to being reblogged by Ashley Clements (Lizzie Bennet) and production designer Katie Moest, tweeted by Geek & Sundry, and finally reblogged by Hank Green, producer of The Lizzie Bennet Diaries. I actually thanks Ashley for the love and she tweeted me back. So. Life Achievement Level unlocked.

While I really, truly, absolutely love doing fan art, I am also reminded that I have my own original characters and story that I’d like to get out in some form. So last night I decided to sketch out two of the leads and go ahead and color them, too.

art: allie mae

September 12, 2012 by Sharon | 2 Comments

Had this song stuck in my head for a while now. Been thinking about drawing something for it for just as long.

I really like how the hand-drawn lettering turned out. It was an experiment, based on the type of stuff you usually see in tattoo designs as well as those elaborately drawn on chalkboards.

Listen to the song “Allie Mae” by El Cantador HERE.

EDIT: I submitted this for this week’s Illustration Friday theme: imagination.
